You found a notary, scheduled the appointment, and you’re ready to get your document handled. Simple enough, right?
Usually, yes. But a little preparation can save you from a wasted trip, a delayed document, or having to schedule another appointment.
If you need notary services in Florida, here’s what you should have ready before your appointment.
1. Bring Acceptable Identification
One of a Florida notary’s most important responsibilities is verifying the identity of the person signing the document.
Bring a current form of identification that meets Florida’s requirements, such as an acceptable state-issued driver’s license, identification card, passport, or another qualifying form of ID.
Make sure the name on your identification reasonably corresponds with the name appearing on your document.
No acceptable identification? Contact me before your appointment. Depending on the circumstances, Florida law provides other methods of establishing a signer’s identity.
2. Bring the Entire Document
Please bring the complete document, not just the page that needs a signature.
Your document should also be completed before the appointment except for information that must be completed during the notarization.
And don’t assume you should sign everything before your notary arrives.
Some notarial acts require the signature to be made in the notary’s presence. If you’re unsure, the safest option is simple: wait to sign.
3. Know Whether You Need Witnesses
This is one of the most common sources of confusion.
A notary and a witness are not necessarily the same thing.
Some documents may require witnesses in addition to notarization. If your document requires witnesses, find out how many are needed and whether there are specific qualifications they must meet.
Not sure? Ask the person, attorney, title company, agency, or organization that prepared or will receive your document.
4. Make Sure Everyone Who Needs to Sign Is Available
If multiple people’s signatures need to be notarized, make sure the necessary signers are available and have proper identification.
A notary cannot simply notarize someone’s signature because another person says it’s theirs.
